Progettata per rilanciare il marchio Fiat nei rally dopo il pensionamento della 124 Abarth, la 131 Abarth fu sviluppata nel corso del 1975, debuttando in forma molto sperimentale sotto il nome di Abarth SE031 al Giro d'Italia nel novembre di quell'anno. Omologata in Gruppo 4, la vettura era basata su una 131 Abarth stradale, che a sua volta dell'auto di serie aveva ben poco. Il debutto nei rally avvenne in versione prototipo e dal 1976 l'impegno della Fiat si fece continuo; la prima vittoria fu conquistata nell'aprile del 1976 al Rally dell'Elba. Superati alcuni problemi legati a sospensioni e cambio, la vettura diventò molto competitiva e in grado di giocarsela con le Lancia Stratos e le Ford Escort. Nel 1977 arrivò il primo titolo nel mondiale rally, cui ne seguirono altri due. La Fiat 131 Abarth Gruppo 4 continuò a correre fino al 1982, prima col team ufficiale, poi anche con squadre private, che successivamente passarono alla nuova Lancia 037, omologata in Gruppo B. La 131 Abarth resta un'icona dei rally, che venne pilotata da tanti campioni, come Alen, Roehrl, Andruet, Verini, Bacchelli e così via.

Designed to relaunch the Fiat brand in rallies after the 124 Abarth, the 131 Abarth was developed during 1975; an experimental exemplar was entered in the 1975 Giro d'Italia. Homologated in Group 4, the car was based on the road going 131 Abarth, which had very little in the production car. The rally debut took place in a prototype version and from 1976 Fiat's commitment continued, the first win being clinched at the 1976 Elba Rally. After overcoming some problems related to suspension and gearbox, the car became very competitive and capable of playing with the Lancia Stratos and Ford Escorts. In 1977 Fiat clinched the first world rally title, which was followed by two more. The Fiat 131 Abarth Group 4 continued to run until 1982, with the works team and then with privateers, which subsequently switched to the new Lancia 037, homologated in Group B. The 131 Abarth remains an icon of the rally world; it was driven by many champions, such as Alen, Roehrl, Andruet, Verini, Bacchelli and so on.
